BAFTA Sunday – surprises, delights, yawns

The problem with Sunday evenings is that you don’t want them to end – then it’s Monday. One way to extend those precious Sunday hours even further is to watch a movie awards ceremony. That’ll put you in a different time continuum altogether. This evening has been extraordinarily lengthened by the BAFTAs and I may be being premature but I think it’s over. And that means it’s time to express some outrage and delight.

Delight at Duncan Jones’s most moving speech at receiving the award for Most outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer. At last Moon was recognised and hopefully because of this award many more will take a look at this fantastic film. Duncan was on the point of tears as he said that he now knows what he wants to do with his life. That was the beginning of the ceremony and it was a great start. It ended with Vanessa Redgrave theatrically courtseying to Prince William and delivering an interminable dinner speech. Sunday evening suddenly seemed that it might not end after all.

But more delight at Carey Mulligan being named as best actress for An Education and at Colin Firth for his best actor award. I didn’t enjoy A Single Man but I was glad to see Colin get some recognition at last and I wouldn’t have thought Jeff Bridges would begrudge it as he’ll most certainly win the Oscar next month.

While Avatar won a techie award or two, the main awards all went the way of The Hurt Locker, winning best film and best director, making Kathryn Bigelow the first woman to win the honour. But it was always going to be between the two.

But what was a surprise to me was the Orange Rising Star award being given to Kristen Stewart and not Carey Mulligan or Nick Hoult. But it shouldn’t have been a surprise because this was the award voted for by the public and it is a fact that those Twilight fans that Kristen praised in her speech would have voted in their thousands. Kristen didn’t look surprised or particularly gratified either. I hope that in her future roles, Kristen may show the rest of us what she’s made of.

Congratulations to Duncan Jones! You can see the full list of winners here.

ugh. I saw Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart on stage and felt incredibly detached from this “Twilight” new youth stuff. They both look like sulking for styling purposes. Go do some drugs or have a drink, whatever… *yawns*

Hi Winterbird! Seeing Rob Patttinson and Kristin Stewart there made me feel like I was from a different age. But maybe that was them, not me. And maybe it was just me, but they gave off an aura of not giving a damn. The sooner the dreary and anaemic Twilight saga gives the ghost the better. * yawns * Good to see you her,, Winterbird!
