The Social Network trailer – special. Green Lantern suit – not special.

Today the tweeting film and comic community has been getting very excited about a man in a green CGI suit, not a stitch in sight. Yes, today we got the first look at Ryan Reynolds as the Green Lantern, courtesy of EW. My initial response was that I couldn’t see how painting a green eye mask on your face would be much of a disguise. Even Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent went to a bit more trouble. And where’s the lantern?

But never mind all that, because hot on the heels of this superhero comes a super trailer – for The Social Network, David Fincher’s new movie. This is very special indeed. And it shows the power of David Fincher for me – I know little about Facebook (except that I don’t like it) and yet if David Fincher makes a film about it then I know I want to see it. If anyone can inject drama and suspense into the little details, it’s him. But the details are set within a wide landscape and context, all magnificently recreated and intensified through colour, music and things you wouldn’t even notice unless you searched for them or were told they were there. David Fincher’s films are to be explored through repeated viewings. It’s a miracle I haven’t worn out my Zodiac and Benjamin Button discs.

And the take on Creep here is a great touch.

On the eve of Inception – how I’m longing for that one (despite my normal irritation with Leo DiCaprio) – the release of this trailer demonstrates to me that it’s not just the movies with cgi, evil exes, 3D and green maskage that I’m looking forward to. There is so much to enjoy.

Talking of things I didn’t enjoy, I saw Eclipse this week as a bit of an experiment and as a dare – thanks to Excuses and Half Truths Rob – and he today posted his own take on this painful couple of hours: The Girl Everyone Wants. This is much more fun to read than the film was to watch.

Update: Thanks to Movieweb I can see more evidence that Peter Sarsgaard is not looking at his best in Green Lantern. Gonna be a toughie to watch.

Speaking as a fan of the Green Lantern, I have to say I agree with you on the suit. It looks more Swamp Thing than space cop.
Glad you liked the post on Eclipse – it was one way to start working through the pain. I’ve had a week of films that have thoroughly depressed me. The Mist had one of the biggest downer endings I’ve ever seen, and the yet-to-be-released Buried (starring yer man in the green CGIsuit, coinkidinkily) is set entirely in a coffin in which the lead character has been … well, the title of the film kind of gives it away. If we weren’t camping this weekend, I’d be all over Inception. Next week, I guess. So keep yer spoilers to yerself! ;-)

  2. WDW says:

Morning Rob! Agreed – he’s like Crocodile Boy in Highway. The glowy thing in the chest looks familiar too…

I think I’ll avoid those two movies (although I normally quite like Ryan – hunky :D ). I’ve got to say that Buried sounds not at all like the kind of film I’d put myself through. Hoping to see Inception this evening – I’ll do a spoilerfree review and maybe hide in the review section a clearly-labelled spoiler version. I’ve been avoiding all reviews as I don’t trust em for leaving out spoilers.

Have a nice time in the tent (I’m now being reminded of a certain scene in Eclipse – oh will the memories ever leave me???)
