Nice to hear you enjoyed it. I didn’t know what to expect, but absolutely loved it. Clooney is great (as always) and the movie dealt with emotions in such a great way, slowly building on top of others to form a complex tapestry.

Hi Susan! Thanks very much for letting me know what you thought. I’m definitely less forgiving. I need characters to be more than two-dimensional even if it is done from the perspective of a horse, who was most definitely only two-dimensional himself. I o love Spielberg too and it was good to spot Toby!

I felt manipulated too, Nostra. Not a pleasant feeling at all, although like you I normally do’t mind when it’s by Spielberg. It just didn’t work this time. Possibly the animal perspective ruined it for me.

Hi Kate! I’ve finally seen War Horse so now I can read your review. I think we had remarkably similar viewing experiences, right down to the unnecessary kitchen towel (except I had facial tissues in my bag). I also couldn’t stop thinking about Black Beauty at the beginning, and those scenes of the fighting in the trenches have made an indelible impression. Overall I think I may have enjoyed it just a bit more than you, maybe not seeing the human characters to be quite as two-dimensional as you did; this was the horse’s story after all. I think I may have been more forgiving generally because it is a period piece that strongly reminded me of MANY of the Disney features that I grew up with. I may have some immunity to horse movies as well, but I love Spielberg! And I enjoyed recognizing Toby Kebbell (Prince Garsiv from POP) as the soldier who ventured out of his trench to rescue Joey.

Looks promising! We just had a premiere in Poland on Friday. I like Polański’s movies, so maybe
I will see it. I feel a need for some comedy. And those 4 great actors give a hope for a good acting. Thank you Kate for such a fine review.

I felt manipulated with this movie, something I normally don’t mind from Spielberg, but here it was obvious that as a viewer I was supposed to feel something. I unfortunately didn’t and was quite disappointed by this. Like you say there is some stuff that’s worth watching.
